A member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame , Air Force Captain CHARLES ELWOOD "CHUCK" YEAGER was the first to break the sound barrier. On October 14, 1947, Yeager's X-1 rocket-powered research plane, attached to a B-29 mother plane until reaching an altitude of 25,000 feet, streaked at over 662 mph to more than 40,000 feet over Rogers Dry Lake in southern California. The feat, which was not publicly announced until June of 1948, was not Yeager's last record-breaker; on December 12, 1953, he set a world record of 1,650 mph in an X-1A rocket plane. Over twenty years after retiring from the Air Force with the rank of Brigadier General (1975), Yeager duplicated his history-making feat on October 14, 1997 - exactly fifty years after first breaking the sound barrier. After making his first flight in 1960, Rushworth would make 34 flights - a record for X-15 pilots - before leaving the program in 1966. He then flew F-4s on 189 combat missions in Vietnam. Rushworth also served as Commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base and as the Commander of the Air Force Test and Evaluation Center at Kirtland Air Force Base. Named Chief Air Force Test Pilot in 1951, he also flew the X-1, X-4, X-5 and a number of other experimental aircraft. Everest also served as head of the United States Air Force Aerospace Rescue and Recover Service in the 1970s before retiring as a Brigadier General. Also the author of a 1958 autobiography , The Fastest Man Alive , Everett is enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

In 1943, Moorer was given command of Bombing Squadron 132 , which operated across the central Atlantic. Moorer, who held the Gray Eagle Award (as the most senior active naval aviator) from 1972 until his retirement in 1974, is a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. In the 1920s and 1930s, he set various speed and flight records. During WWII, Doolittle, a veteran of WWI, and 79 other fighter pilots ("Doolittle's Raiders") bombed Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first air attack on the Japanese capital. Also hit were targets in Yokohama and other cities, scoring a huge victory for U.

Morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Doolittle was promoted to Brigadier General the next day and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the raid. After retiring from the military at the end of WWII, Doolittle was an executive with Shell Oil until his retirement in 1959. Nicknamed "the Careful Daredevil" , Stapp was a frequent volunteer on the "rocket sled" , and he was later involved in setting standards for seatbelt safety. Four years later, Knight became an X-15 pilot , and in 1967 he flew the X-15A-2 to a speed of Mach 6.7 4,520 m.

, a record that still holds today. Knight then flew 253 combat sorties over Vietnam in an F-100.

Inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1985, Knight had begun his political career a year earlier, serving on the City Council of Palmdale, California. Scientist and astronaut THOMAS D. "TOM" JONES (born in 1955) flew aboard the B-52D Stratofortress as an Air Force officer before being selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1990. Jones made four voyages into space: two aboard the Endeavor (STS-59 in April 1994; STS-68 in October 1994), one aboard the Columbia (STS-80 in 1996) and his last aboard the Atlantis (STS-98 in 2001).

Jones, who logged 1,272 hours in space, was instrumental in the completion of a number of scientific objectives , including the installation of the U. Destiny Laboratory Module, which he accomplished during three space walks lasting a total of over 19 hours.
