Souvenir First Day Postal Cover issued August 30, 1947 commemorating the ill-fated Martin 2-0-2 and signed in ink by GLENN L. 10-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D. Glenn Martin was an American aviation pioneer who designed and built his own aircraft, as well as being an active pilot. His company, The Glenn L.

Martin Company, developed through a series of mergers into what became Lockheed Martin. The Martin 2-0-2 (or Two-o-Two) suffered production delays and a series of major aviation mishaps and crashes due to structural failures in wings attributed to a flawed metal alloy that limited the success of this twin-engine, unpressurized airliner.

This particular cover is especially collectible not only because it bears Martin's original signature, but also because it is addressed to The President, White House, Washington, D. Truman was President at the time, from 1945 to 1953. The envelope is not sealed. Note that there are no enclosures.
